TSH level in the body is the best measure to verify thyroid functions. TSH or thyroid stimulating hormone is secreted from pituitary gland located in the hypothalamus of the brain. It activates the thyroid gland for the production of thyroid hormones in sufficient quantity to regulate metabolism
If the TSH level falls below the normal range, it is a case of hyperthyroid or overactive thyroid. While if its level is more than normal, it is a case of hypothyroidism. However, TSH production may also vary due to malfunctioning of pituitary gland incase of any injury, damage and stroke.
In such case the doctor recommends comprehensive T3 and T4 hormone levels as thyroid test. T3 is also known as triiodothyronine which is referred as active thyroid hormone. Although the level of T3 hormone is used for the determination of underactive thyroid but it always does not indicate accurate results.
Other test that proves effective for the determination of thyroid disoerder includes measurement of serum thyroid T4 hormones. It is most frequently used test for thyroid also referred as T7. T4 indicates the amount of thyroxine present in the blood samples and is suitable for measuring thyroid functions.
Thyroid Binding Globulin (TBG) is another measure for thyroid levels in the blood. It is a kind of protein which thyroid hormones gets attached to it and is used to determine the deficiency or excess of thyroid hormones level or TBG level in thyroid test. Taking prescription drugs adviced by your doctor along with thyroid supplements and balnced diet helps to overcome thyroid issues.
